Reading in July

Nothing much to brag about, but I have finished two cosy mysteries lately.

One is Emma Jameson´s “Ice Blue”, the first novel in the Lord and Lady Hetheridge series.

Not unexpectedly, it is much like a modern-day Lord Peter Wimsey, or Elizabeth George´s Lynley and Havers series.

After a few rather quiet chapters it gathered speed and turned into a really good reading experience. Very cosy (but with some sexual banter which may not be for Dorothy Sayers fans). Emma Jameson is probably known by some of you as Stephanie Abbott, writer of a fantasy series.

“Her left hand shot into the shrinking space between doors and wall, and the mechanism halted, opening again. Kate´s shoulder bag rocketed backward as she entered, smacking the nearest navy-suited man, and the slick bottoms of her pumps threw her off balance, almost sending her into the arms of a scowling, thin-lipped woman. Relieved to still be in custody of her coffee, Kate repositioned her handbag, corrected her posture and smiled at her reflection in the lift´s highly polished metal doors.”

The other one was “Strictly Murder” by the British writer Lynda Wilcox. The first Verity Long mystery is not nearly as popular as Emma Jameson´s series, but in my opinion it is a very promising beginning of a series. Verity Long works as the Personal Assistant of a crime fiction writer which gives her the perfect excuse to stick her nose in all sorts of affairs. Good idea for a series, and I´m looking forward to meeting Verity again.
